The Selection Layer of the Agentic Web

The space I work on is the selection layer of the agentic web: how agents choose what they consume, and why they can believe it.

The web is being rebuilt for its new users: agents browse and increasingly buy, and businesses are starting to expose agent-native surfaces. Every consumption choice (which tool to call, which business to buy from) used to be made by a human, invisibly and for free. Agents remove that human and inherit signals built to persuade humans; nothing reliable replaces them. The industry's bet is vendor self-declaration: a discovery standard (ARD: Google, Microsoft, 11 launch partners) where each platform publishes a machine-readable manifest at a fixed address. Forty days in, I checked that address on all 11 partners plus 9 major platforms: one manifest existed — 520 bytes.

The truth about what serves an agent can only be seen from inside its call path — a human can't see the calls, and a static benchmark rots. So I built the measurement into my own agents' path: paired duels on real queries, my own noise measured first. The commoditized category I measured has one dominant quality factor plus a hygiene dimension invisible to benchmarks; where coverages diverge, winners should fragment by context, which is still a hypothesis. The invariants travel across categories; the tactics adapt.

The layer must serve the human principal, as a fiduciary. Agent preference predicted actual usage 58% of the time and final correctness 40%. Tune an index to what agents prefer and you rebuild clickbait, for machines. Verified outcome governs; cheaper signals count as far as they track it. And it demands a neutrality the players positioning there can't offer: their revenue rides on what they would be judging. Mine is designed to be paid by the buyer, never by what's ranked — a design constraint, held from day one.

The rebuild has sibling problems I work on and keep open: who an agent is and what it's allowed to do, whether each side can trust the other, agents that mostly still can't open their own accounts. Selection stays primary: each of them feeds the same map.

Why it matters: this layer decides whether the rebuilt web runs on measured merit or on marketing — for tools today, for every agent-native business surface next.
